My Story

As an interior designer, I always used colour in my work, add to that structure, space, texture, and form, and you’ll discover the eclectic outcomes of my projects.

Some years ago my focus changed from interiors to creating artwork, my first exhibition showed the UPSCALE Meccano series.

I enjoy expressing myself through the exploration of various themes and different mediums - oils, acrylics, collage and metalwork that keep my creative process dynamic, allowing for evolution and surprising discoveries.

One of the UPSCALE 3:1 Artworks is in the Art House Trust, Pah Homestead.

My work is held in private collections in New Zealand, Europe and Australia.

“….very interesting relationship between colours and shapes and textures. The final test of an artwork, I think, is whether it bears looking at over and over again. Your painting (Happenstance) passes that test.” Neville Brandon

“Andrew is an artist whose passions run from the fresh primaries of a Howard Hodgkin palette to the veiled layers of a Hokusai print….” Eve de Castro-Robinson

“I was drawn to Andrew’s work at a friend’s house and on visiting his Parnell studio chose one of his large 6:1 Meccano works. Andrew completed the installation at our home on a prominent wall and it looks striking day and night. We love the way the artwork throws out shadows and the juxtaposition of the colours. It’s cheerful and we love it!”  Jodie Archibald

"I instantly liked Andrew’s collages when I saw them in his studio. Anyone with an eye for the unusual would have immediately spotted the clever combination of painted background washes, swirling with mysterious and arresting images. The collages contain luminous colours and elongated images. Never boring, always rewarding. We have two hanging together on our walls, constantly admired." Jennifer Thompson

“At first glance this was an obvious buy. Andrew’s striking artwork stood out with its bright colours and giant size Meccano pieces. It created a nostalgic feel and I was drawn to it at a personal level. I bought this as a gift for my mechanical engineer husband, knowing he too would enjoy the 3D nature of the work, its crazy shapes and the shadows created by the pieces. We love it." Bridget Moran

“I was drawn to Andrew’s Meccano artwork the moment I saw it. The bright primary colours, the clever connections between the shapes and the 3D nature of the piece all combine to make an intriguing and creative artwork. An unexpected pleasure is viewing the picture at night, when the artwork creates an interplay of shadows on the canvas.” Philippa Clayton

“Andrew wields a rare mix of vision and attention to detail. I’ve used him for several projects, commercial and personal, and have always been impressed by the breadth of his thinking and the quality of the result.” Luke Pierson, Heyday, Wellington.
